Dr. Vaccaro is a Professor of Orthopedic and Neurosurgery and serves as Co-Associate Director for Acute Care for the RSCICDV. He also serves as Co-Director of Reconstruction Spine Services at Rothman Institute and as Co-Director of the Spine Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University.
He received his B.S. degree in Biology from Boston College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and his Medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1987 where he graduated Cum Laude. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and spine fellowship at the University of California at San Diego. He received a Ph.D. in 2007 in the field of Spinal Trauma.
Dr. Vaccaro has received numerous awards commending his outstanding and prolific research and has over 680 publications, 245 book chapters and is the editor of 25 textbooks. He is the past President of the American Spinal Injury Association.
His current research involves the timing of surgery after traumatic spinal cord injury, regeneration of the degenerative intervertebral disk, the use of alternative bone graft substitutes in spinal fusion surgery including recombinant tissue engineering, minimally invasive spinal surgical procedures and the development of spinal implants for traumatic and degenerative disorders of the spine.
